논문제목 Selective Optical Response based on Liquid Crystals with Organic Ionics

논문초록 Liquid crystals (LCs) have amplification property due to their anisotropic nature and long-range molecular ordering. Therefore, LCs have been utilized for reporting a variety of chemical stimuli. However, the low selectivity was pointed out as a problem. Here we suggest general design rules to control selectivity and sensitivity by decorating the interface with organic ionics (OIs). OI-LC film optically reports acetic acid at 1 ppm. LC molecule electrostatically and physically interacts with OI causing vertical orientation of the LC molecule. In the exposure of acetic acid, however, carboxylic group of OI interrupts the existing interaction, changing LC orientation. Furthermore, their characteristics are controllable by modulating the carbon chain length and type of counter ion in OIs. Exploiting the strategies, we achieved high selectivity that can distinguish even one carbon chain length of target chemical.
